When we say the term cannabis, we are referring to a wide range plants with varying genetics and chemical makeup.  But from a legal status, we can really divide the plant into two categories –

Adult use recreational/medical is often referred to as marijuana with a THC measurement above .3%

and

Hemp, with a THC count equal to or below that measurement.  

An important detail to examine is the legal status according to the federal government.  Marijuana is technically illegal at the federal level, but legalized at the state level in some places.  Hemp has been completely legalized by the 2018 Farm Bill and has few of the restrictions that marijuana has, with ensured protections in place at the federal level.

Despite robust state programs for both sides of the cannabis classification, it has not been without shifts in policy along the way, as Courtney speaks to above.
