As the cannabis industry continues to expand, trade groups have emerged as essential players, driving innovation, fostering collaboration, and advocating for fair policies. These organizations bring together businesses, professionals, and stakeholders across the cannabis supply chain to address industry challenges, shape policy, and set standards for best practices. This series will introduce you to some of the most influential cannabis trade groups, each offering unique resources and insights that help strengthen the cannabis ecosystem.
From legal and regulatory advocacy to market research and professional networking, cannabis trade groups are a vital resource for companies seeking to thrive in this competitive environment. By uniting diverse voices under common goals, these groups not only elevate the industry’s profile but also work to ensure its long-term sustainability.
Let’s explore the leading cannabis trade groups, their missions, and the ways they support businesses and professionals across the cannabis landscape.
The Cannabis Industry Alliance of Oregon (CIAO/ORCA)
The Cannabis Industry Alliance of Oregon (CIAO) is the result of a merger between Oregon’s four largest and most effective cannabis trade associations: The Oregon Retailers of Cannabis Association, Oregon Cannabis Association, Oregon Industry Progress Association, and Farms Inc.
The CIAO is a member-driven non-profit cannabis trade association. We represent 500+ cannabis licenses and ancillary businesses from across the state. We coordinate with all of our members to fight for solutions that allow our industry to thrive. Our board of directors helps shape our specific positions on matters relating to retail cannabis policy at the municipal, state, and federal levels.
American Trade Association for Cannabis and Hemp (ATACH)
ATACH represents a wide spectrum of cannabis and hemp businesses, advocating for policies that benefit both sectors. They focus on standards development, state and federal legislative engagement, and providing legal and compliance support for members.
U.S. Cannabis Council (USCC)
USCC is a trade group that unites several cannabis organizations and businesses with a focus on federal legalization, social equity, and sustainable industry practices. Formed from a coalition of advocacy organizations and companies, USCC works to create cohesive policy reform at the national level.
Hemp Industries Association (HIA)
Founded in 1994, HIA is a trade association supporting businesses in the hemp sector. They advocate for the legal growth of the hemp industry, provide guidance on best practices, and help members navigate regulatory requirements for hemp-derived products.
Association of Cannabinoid Specialists (ACS)
ACS focuses on the medical cannabis sector, representing healthcare professionals and businesses that serve patients. They provide education, training, and advocacy around cannabis medicine, working to standardize care and promote safe access for patients.
