Some tribes refer to sovereign status as the “legal grey”, meaning that there are many unhonored treaties and legal guarantees that could come into conflict with the US Federal government’s own sovereign policies.  But this legal grey area is very similar to the states rights arguments presented by many cannabis friendly states.  If we are going to imagine a stable and vibrant tribal economy, both on and off the reservation, what does it look like?  What businesses take advantage of the tribal sovereign land and treaty rights, and what businesses don’t?  What does tribal regulatory and economic governance look like specifically in regards to cannabis?  In the previous topic, Jackson brought up some interesting ideas on how tribes can take advantage of their hard fought status as sovereign nations, but many are not acting on it. Let’s take 5-10 minutes to discuss this important topic.
