There are a number of important terms that will be referenced throughout the course. Below are a few to familiarize yourself with before we begin.
Cannabis
The genus Cannabis (Family Cannabaceae) often refers to the various species within this family most notably C. Sativa, C. Indica, and C. Ruderalis. The plant is widely attributed to Asia as its origin point.
Hemp
Varieties of Cannabis that have been cultivated for their low THC count (>.3%)
Marijuana
Varieties of Cannabis that have been cultivated for their high THC count (>.3%). Marijuana is currently classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance in the United States.
Terpenes
Terpenes are naturally occurring chemical compounds found in plants and some animals. They’re responsible for the aromas, flavors, and even colors associated with various types of vegetation. In terms of cannabis, terpenes are what make certain strains smell or taste different from others.
Cannabinoids
Cannabinoids are a group of substances found in the cannabis plant, mainly delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD), but current research is still uncovering more from the 480 identified compounds in the cannabis family.
Strains
A strain is a genetic variant, a subtype within a biological species. The term works when talking about various genetic expressions in a wide array of cannabis plants like “Blue Dream” or “Wedding Cake”.
Cultivar
While the term strain and cultivar are often interchangeable, technically a cannabis cultivar is a variety of the Cannabis plant that has been selectively bred to have specific characteristics or traits. It is a plant variety developed through controlled breeding techniques to produce plants with desirable traits, such as specific colors, shapes, aromas, or potency.
Isomer
THC isomers, also known as THC variants, are compounds with the same chemical formula as THC but a different arrangement of atoms. In the cannabis world, a THC isomer generally refers to a THC variant that manufacturers have chemically modified to produce in higher concentrations.
